Six Myths that Hold You Back

Time Heals

Time doesn't heal. Action within time does. We know that people have waited 10, 20 or even 30 years to feel better. Learning to navigate grief is critical to healing.

Grieve Alone

Often the advice "grief alone" is subtly implied. People might say, "You need your space to grief" or "Give your mom some space". The truth is the support and guidance can significantly help the healing process.

Be Strong

Often the people experiencing grief feel the need to be stong for others or are asked to be strong for the sake of others. The truth is that feeling safe enough to be vulnerable will help the healing process.

Don't Feel Bad

Well-meaning people may try to console grievers by saying. "Don't feel bad". This misguided support can leave grievers feeling isolated and shut down, like here is no where they can safely express their grief.

Replace The Loss

This type of advice is often given after the loss of a pet or when a relationship ends. In truth, burying your feeling with distraction can sometimes inhibit the healing process.

Keep Busy

Sometimes grievers think, "If I just keep busy, I won't have time to think about the loss". This attitude prevents the person from feeling their grief, and they may never get a chance to heal from the loss.
